Prevention

SRP-MIC offers participants the opportunity to earn WellPath points by practicing prevention in their lifestyle. Those preventive practices which are considered to be: most helpful for maintaining health; prudent based on the individual; and which are most cost-effective have been endorsed for WellPath points.

WellPath provides incentives to employees to follow preventive medicine recommendations of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

These practices are reviewed by an independent panel to determine which are the most effective for you and your family. People who practice prudent, preventive medicine avoid illness, and through early detection, may reduce healthcare costs, and have better outcomes, if they do become ill.

We also provide an incentive to have an annual medical exam with your primary care physician. The preventive program works best when you use the checklist generated by the calculator at your annual preventive medical exam to discuss completing the Grade A preventive practices with your physician.

As an example: Incentives are provided for activities such as taking an annual flu shot, mammography, or colonoscopy, when appropriate. If you use the calculator to the right, you can identify those preventive practices which are recommended for you. Incentives can be earned for completing each of the “Grade A” recommendations.

Examples of preventive practices and WellPath points:

  • Annual Flu Shot: 100 points
  • Annual physical: 10 points
  • Donating blood: 10 points
  • CPR certification: 15 points
  • First Aid certification: 15 points
  • Grade A preventive practices: 10 pts

If you are on an SRP-MIC health plan, you have great medical coverage.

Many of the recommended preventive practices will be free of cost to you in compliance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“ ACA”). Other practices may be covered under SRP-MIC’s  health plan’s wellness benefits with no co-insurance or deductible applied (up to $800/annually). If you have questions, please schedule an appointment with your benefits representative and/or review the wellness benefits in our plan prior to scheduling care. You can find the SRP-MIC Plan Document at www.myameriben.com. You can also request a booklet from your Human Resources Department.

DEXA Body Scans

Risks and Benefits:

“The dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan measures bone thickness and the amount of fat and lean (non-fat) tissue in the body.  The procedure is like an x-ray.  The DXA scan involves radiation exposure which is less than a person would receive from a chest X-ray, a dental X-ray or a >1-hour flight. If you are pregnant, or have any other concerns related to the radiation from imaging, you should cancel your DEXA scan and consult with your physician.” The scan does require you to lie flat on your back and still for up to 10-minutes.

The Dexa Body Composition Analysis Scan will provide you with a comprehensive 10-page report and a consultation with a WellPath Coach that provides you with a detailed understanding of your body composition. Your report and consultation will include:

  • Total body fat percentage
  • Total lean percentage
  • Bone Density
  • Muscle Symmetry
  • Regional composition (i.e. How much fat, lean, and bone in arms, legs, trunk, etc)
  • Images of bone, lean, and fat tissue
  • Baseline measurements to be compared to subsequent scans over time, especially after there has been a considerable change in body weight.
    • Subsequent scans can help evaluate the quality of diet and/or exercise programs.

What to expect:

“The Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan requires you to lie still, flat on your back on a table as the scanning machine moves above your body.  You will be asked to remove all metal jewelry or clothing. The DXA scan is like an X-ray, and takes about 5-10 minutes. After your imaging you will receive a report of your results and proceed into Two Waters B106 or B102 for a 15-minute consultation with a WellPath Coach. WellPath covers all the costs associated with your scan and consultation if both are completed.
